SUBJECT: Surge Workforce Newsletter - Week 22, 2020

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to another edition of the Surge Workforce Newsletter.

Since the last newsletter was sent 2 weeks ago, New Zealand has had no new confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19, which is fantastic news. These case numbers have caused a slowdown in worker requests, but as long as we keep hearing from employers in need, the Surge Workforce will continue to operate.

While requests have been slowing down, we've been working behind the scenes to ensure we're prepared for what's ahead - especially for the kaiawhina workforce, where we've seen employee shortages and high demand for workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you're interested in transitioning into a kaiawhina role as part of the COVID-19 response, the Ministry of Health has collaborated with Careerforce, an Industry Training Organisation, to create an online learning program that helps you gain the skills you need to do so.

The programme comes in two parts:

·         Part one teaches you about the three core competencies (observe and respond to changes, vulnerability and abuse, professional and ethical behaviour) that are required across all kaiawhina roles.

·         Part two teaches you the common technical skills (challenging behaviour, minimising falls, support for different cultures) across the kaiawhina roles.

For further information about the programme and how to apply, visit the Surge Workforce website.

Stay safe, and I'll talk to you in two weeks.
